Southampton Sailing Regatta is proud to announce cancer charity Maggie’s as our Lead Charity of the 2019 event. They will have a yacht in the Legal Cup on the 18th of September, and if you want to enter as an individual, why not go through them and support this amazing charity while you get a great day out on the water.
Maggie’s centre supports people living with cancer across the UK and will open their Southampton based centre in 2020. Maggie Keswick Jencks lived with advanced cancer for two years and that is when she laid out her ideas for cancer care. She was determined that she should not “lose the joy of living in the fear of dying”.
In order to live more positively with cancer, Maggie believed people needed information, stress-reducing strategies, psychological support and the opportunity to meet other people in similar circumstances in a relaxed and beautiful setting. All Maggie’s centres are individually designed by leading architects to feel like a home.
Maggie’s yacht will be a part of the last day of sailing and has space for ten individuals. There is no prior experience of sailing needed but if you already have your spot in one of our six cups you will still be able to support them. Maggie’s will be holding a raffle with some amazing prizes during the after sail awards that will take place all three days.
George Louch, Event Director at Southampton Sailing Regatta, said “We are very excited to have Maggie’s on board with us for this year’s Southampton Sailing Regatta and look forward to seeing their yacht out on the water. I hope all their team members love the day and the raffle is a great success!”
Gemma McKnight, Centre Fundraising Manager at Maggie’s, adds: “We are delighted to be lead charity for Southampton Sailing Week Regatta. Maggie’s is a charity solely reliant on donations to support and grow our network of centres. Money raised from this partnership will help us move one step closer to bringing Maggie’s to the South and to make the biggest difference possible to people living with cancer and their family and friends.”
