My name is Dylan Lakeman-Brown, age 15, and I am a student at the Mountbatten School. I originally got into triathlons as me and my parents swam at Eastleigh Lake, where some TryTri events were held. I competed in my first one there and loved it. I chose to take part as I had done all the sports individually however never together, so I thought I’d give it a go.
My first real triathlon was the May Day triathlon in Winchester a couple of years ago, I really liked it because all the marshals and volunteers were so helpful and encouraging. They helped me with my bike, getting it on and off the rack, and generally encouraged everyone the whole way around. Despite being a very competitive person, the fact that everyone gets a medal takes lots of pressure off. My favourite part of the day was on the finishing straight, where the man on the microphone calls your name all the way to the end.
A tip that I would give to any child taking part would be to go at your own speed and conserve energy so you have enough to carry on all the way round as it is easy to get caught up in the moment and sprint out at the start. I would do it again, in fact I’ve done it three times since then, because it’s a good way of seeing how/ if I’ve improved from the previous year.
I had a go and loved it, so if you haven’t had a chance to Tri it out yet then get going! See you there…..
