There are many ways of approaching a networking event. How you are going to prepare is all about what your end-goal with attending the event is but there are a few general things you can do to prepare yourself:
- Know how you are going to stand out
What kind of event are you going to, is it possible to stand out from the crowd in a positive way? The purpose for most people attending a networking event is gaining contacts, if you are remembered in a positive light after, there is a higher chance that they accept your connection request on LinkedIn, or return your call. Standing out could be about how friendly, relatable or kind you were. At the event you are going to, is there a competitive element? Would the winning team stand out?
- Is your card up to date?
Decide before the event how you would like people to contact you and make sure that is possible by making sure your contact information is kept up to date and your business card has the appropriate information.
- If you are going as a team, make sure there are different personalities in the group
People are different, and we all know this, having a mix of personalities representing your team will ensure that you cover your bases and is able to connect with as many people as possible.
